Direct molecular hydrogen sulphide scrubbing with hollowfibre membranes.

Abstract

This study examined a non-wetted hollow fibre membrane absorption system for removing hydrogen sulphide from air using water as the solvent, addressing limitations of conventional packed or spray towers in anaerobic wastewater treatment. The membrane configuration allowed independent regulation of liquid and gas flow rates and substantially increased the specific contact surface area. Performance was evaluated by measuring overall mass transfer and outlet liquid concentration across varying circulation regimes, gas and liquid flow rates, and surface areas. Analysis using Sherwood number versus Graetz number plots revealed highly efficient mass transfer; however, the transfer coefficient reached a plateau with increasing Graetz number, a behaviour inconsistent with existing empirical models.

Mechanism

The hollow fibre membrane acts as a gas-liquid interface enabling independent flow control; mass transfer of hydrogen sulphide was efficient but reached a maximum value as a function of Graetz number, contrary to standard empirical predictions.
